Meet the Family Behind Smutz Girls

A Grand Haven Family Bakery With a New Storefront

Smutz Girls Bakery is a mom-and-four-daughters bakery and sweet shop opening at Grand Landing in Grand Haven. If you are looking for a family owned bakery Grand Haven neighbors can get to know by name, this is the story behind the treats.

The shop is growing from a home, farmers market, bakery cart, and porch-pickup style business into a public storefront at 515 Miller Dr., Grand Haven, MI 49417. Our space is meant to feel light, bright, warm, and easy to visit, with the smell of fresh baking and espresso helping set the tone from the moment guests walk in.

Ashley DeVrou (Smutz)

I’m the oldest of four girls, married to the love of my life, and a professional dancer with a lifelong passion for performing whose favorite color is pink! Dance has been part of who I am since I was little, and more recently, I’ve also discovered a love for modeling. Above all, my faith in Jesus Christ is the foundation of my life and the center of everything I do.

My family means the world to me. My sisters are my best friends, and some of my favorite childhood memories were made in the kitchen with my mom. I’ve been helping her bake for as long as I can remember. One of my favorite memories is when she would give me my own bowl of flour, and I would sit and play with my Little People toys, pretending the flour was snow.

Another tradition I cherished was our annual “Baking Day”. Before we started our business and baking became a part of everyday life, our family would set aside a special day each year – usually around Christmas – and spend the entire day making a long list of treats together. It was always such a fun day, and I always looked forward to it.

In my free time you’ll likely find me by the water. I adore the beach, whether I’m at the lake or the ocean, and summer is when I thrive! A day spent splashing in the water and lying in the sun – usually involving a smoothie or ice cream – is a day well spent.

I love traveling with my husband, camping, movie nights, all things Disney Princess related, slumber parties with my sisters, and quality time with my family and friends.

As for desserts, my favorites from our menu would have to be our white cake and our Twix cookie – or anything else with frosting! A fun fact about me is that I absolutely hate making frosting, but I love eating it!! And while I enjoy freshly baked cookies, I tend to prefer cold cookie dough compared to the finished cookie.

Whether I’m performing on stage, creating memories in the kitchen, or spending time with the people I love most, I’m grateful for the faith, family, and experiences that continue to shape who I am. I’m a big dreamer at heart, but I’ve found that some of life’s greatest joys are found in the simplest moments.

I’m a creative at heart who finds joy in storytelling, whether that’s through writing, journaling, music, or photography. I have my own photography business and count it a privilege to get to serve couples by photographing their weddings!

My faith in Jesus is my foundation and I’m incredibly grateful for the gospel and the countless ways the Lord has transformed my life. My family and my boyfriend Warner are my greatest blessings, and some of my favorite moments are the simple every day ones spent with the people I love most. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending quality time with my loved ones, listening to live music, or taking strolls with a coffee in hand. Autumn is my favorite season by far—the darker the skies, the colder the air, and the cozier the outfit the happier I am.

In the kitchen, I’m known for being messy. No matter how careful I attempt to be, flour or powdered sugar somehow ends up everywhere. I also have a slightly controversial opinion: I prefer cookies and baked goods to be either cold or a day old rather than warm and fresh from the oven. One of my favorite desserts is our family’s maple cookies…a plate of those on a chilly fall afternoon paired with an iced latte and I’m a happy girl.

Something about me others may not know is I’m a country girl at heart. I grew up hunting, camping, riding quads, climbing trees, and spending as much time outdoors as possible with my family. I hope one day to have a property of my own where I can enjoy those same simple pleasures again. Those experiences shaped who I am and created some of my favorite childhood memories. They also play a huge part in why my family and I are so close and why I’m so excited to have the opportunity to work together!

Kaylee Harmsen (Smutz)

I’m a passionate singer and songwriter who believes life is meant to be lived boldly and authentically. I also play drums and love to dance. I have lots of energy, love connecting with new people, and enjoy embracing every experience life has to offer. My faith is one of the most important things in my life and is my foundation in everything I do. I’m obsessed with the magic of big cities, my favorite color is red, and I’m a huge astrophile who finds inspiration in the stars. I love the beauty of early mornings, but I’m definitely a night owl. Staying up late with my family is one of my favorite things! My all-time favorite dessert is cinnamon rolls. Music, creativity, and genuine connections are what make me feel most alive. I deeply love my husband, my family and my adorable puppy! Spending time with them is one of the most important parts of my life. Being able to be so close to my family and getting to work with them has been one of my favorite experiences! I have so many great memories baking with my family, but one of my favorites was when my sisters and I were baking a cake at 3 am. We messed up the recipe to the cake and the frosting. It was dry and did not taste good, but we still ate it… all of it.

Chandler Smutz

My name is Chandler I am the youngest of the 4 Smutz girls. I am currently a cosmetology student with a passion for beauty, creativity, and helping others feel confident. My favorite color is neon orange. Fall is my favorite season because I love the crisp weather and the beautiful colors when the leaves change. In my free time you can find me enjoying an iced coffee, spending time outdoors, and spending time with my family.

My faith in Jesus Christ is the foundation of my life and the reason I am who I am today. My goal is that my relationship with the Lord leads the way I live, and to reflect Christ’s love, become more like Him, and make Jesus known to those around me. I strive to live each day with faith, authenticity, and gratitude for all He has done in my life.

I’m a pretty chill and laid-back person, but when it comes to the things I care deeply about my passionate side shows! Whether it’s my faith, family, or future career, I strive to do my best and continue to learn and become the best I can be.

It’s hard for me to choose a favorite dessert, but our mini cheesecakes topped with strawberries are definitely at the top of the list! I have so many memories that have been made in the kitchen with my mom and sisters. As long as I can remember, I’ve helped cook dinner, baking sweet treats, and simply enjoying that time together.

Above all, I cherish and value time spent with my family. They are some of my greatest blessings and most treasured gifts. Their love, support, and encouragement mean the world to me, and I am incredibly grateful for the memories we’ve shared and continue to create together.

From Family Baking to Grand Landing

Smutz Girls has always been rooted in family. The business is built around a mom and her four daughters baking together, creating custom desserts, and sharing sweets with the community. The family has been baking together for years, and the Grand Landing storefront is the next chapter of a long-time dream.

Before the storefront, customers found the Smutz Girls bakery through farmers markets, porch pickups, and custom orders. That history matters because it shaped the way the family works: hands-on, personal, creative, and focused on making each order feel special.

How to Say our Name

Smutz is pronounced “Smoots.” It is a small detail, but it is part of the personality of the brand. Around the shop, a playful “Say Smoots” note can help new guests feel like they are already in on the family story.

The name connects to a real family, not a franchise concept. That is part of what makes Smutz Girls feel personal: the people behind the counter, the bakers in the kitchen, and the family behind the name are all part of the same story.

What Makes the Shoppe Different

Smutz Girls is more than a cookie shop and more than a dessert counter. The storefront is a Grand Haven family bakery, sweet shop, coffee bar, and custom dessert destination.

Guests can expect a rotating walk-in selection that may include:

Handmade Sweets and Custom Orders

Custom work is still a major part of the business. Smutz Girls creates custom cookies, custom cakes, custom cupcakes, themed cookie sets, dessert trays, party favors, holiday boxes, and celebration desserts for birthdays, showers, weddings, graduations, teacher gifts, staff treats, and holidays.

The best custom orders start with details: the date, occasion, product type, colors, theme, quantity, flavors, and inspiration photos when available. Because pricing and timing depend on the design and order size, custom desserts are handled through a request process rather than a full online checkout.

If you are planning a celebration, start a custom dessert request so the team can review the details and follow up personally.

Fresh, Personal, and Made With Care

The goal is to be a fresh from scratch bakery Grand Haven guests remember for both flavor and feeling. The shop focuses on handmade sweets Grand Haven families, visitors, and gift-givers can enjoy for everyday stops and special occasions.

That does not mean every flavor is available every day. It means the bakery is built around hands-on work, rotating creativity, custom decorating, and family care. From decorated cookies to morning coffee and crepes, the experience should feel local, welcoming, and memorable.
